Live TV Feed from St Pius X Church

You can now watch and hear all our services live on the internet through the live camera feed from the church. Recently one of our parishioners in Brazil was able to watch the funeral of his grandfather at St Pius X Church. We hope that others will also join in the celebrations of marriage and our daily and Sunday Eucharists. This service is also particularly useful for Nursing Homes and those who are houseboand as it provides a way to link directly to the local church for all our services. Churchservices.tv will soon be able to offer the rent of a set top box along with broadband so that people can view the live church feed directly on their television.

Church Refurbishment Fund Appeal

Towards the end of this year, St Pius X Church will be 50 years old and we begin our church golden jubilee celebrations. In 1960, the church cost a staggering £633,000 (A four bed roomed house in South Dublin could be bought for £4000 at that time). We are so grateful to the priests and parishioners who gave so much of their time and resources in order to pay off the debt in the years that followed.

Fifty years on, we are now in the middle of a major refurbishment project which is essential from a safety point of view as well as adding to the beauty of the church. Thanks to the Church Refurbishment Fund started by my predecessor and the sale of a parish house, we have managed to collect about three quarters of the money required for the project. I would like to thank all those who have and who continue to contribute to the Church refurbishment Fund. In the course of the renovation project, we have discovered a number of extra works that are essential like repair to the roof. I appeal to you to please continue to support the Refurbishment Fund as we will be required to borrow  350,000 euro to complete the project and the fund will help us to meet the repayments towards the loan. In doing so, we will be honouring those who helped build the church and ensure that St Pius X is in good order for the future. If you are a former parishioner and would like to contribute you will find the contact details on the contact us page.

For a full list of all the extensive works that are being carried out on the church see the Refurbishment list page.

Fr Aquinas Duffy

Questions people ask
Q. Where are the original manuscripts of the Gospels and letters of St Paul?
A. There are no surviving original manuscripts of any part of the Bible, just as there are no original fragments of any of the famous Greek or Roman writers of that period such as Virgil or Cicero. We depend on copies of all these writings and copies of copies. Copyists were far from perfect and there are thousands of variations among the documents. The oldest surviving fragments of New Testament texts date from about 150 AD. The oldest complete New Testament dates from the fourth century. Some of the oldest fragments, dating from 250 AD are lodged in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin.

Profile - John Elwes, (Tenor)
He began his musical career at Westminster Cathedral in London where he was Head Chorister. Under the name John Hahessy, he had considerable success as a boy soprano - from BBC broadcasts and recordings, to concerts with conductors such as Benjamin Britten, who dedicated his Corpus Christi Carol to him. At the age of 14 he sang the part of Isaac in the world premiere recording of Britten's canticle Abraham and Isaac with the composer and Peter Pears.

John Elwes has a busy concert and operatic life, mostly in Europe, performing with conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Roger Norrington, Joshua Rifkin, and Christopher Hogwood. He has participated in more than 100 recordings. Notable among these are Dowland's First Book of Ayres, Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin, Purcell’s The Tempest with John Eliot Gardiner, J.S. Bach's Saint Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and B-Minor Mass (BWV 232) with Gustav Leonhardt, Arthur Honegger's Le Roi David with Michel Corboz, and Georg Frideric Handel's Messiah with Masaaki Suzuki. Child Protection Guidelines in St Pius X Parish

There is obviously heightened awareness in the public sphere concerning child protection issues in the Church and in the Archdiocese of Dublin in particular, now that the publication of the interim report of the Commission of Investigation into the Archdiocese of Dublin has been published.

We must first consider those who have been directly affected and assure them of our complete support, if needed and when requested.

It is important to remind you that in this Diocese, guidelines in this area are operated to a high standard. The following guidelines apply

• Safeguarding Children from the National Board for Safeguarding children in the Catholic Church is the most up to date church policy and is available at www.safeguardingchildren.ie

• The state guidelines Children First apply in all our schools and Guidelines in the Diocese are consistent with state policy. www.dohc.ie/publications/pdf/children_first.pdf

• Anyone in this parish working with children -- employees, volunteers and priests are required to participate in Garda Vetting. Details of that process are available at www.dublindiocese.ie

• The Child protection policy that operates in this parish is available from the parish office and can be downloaded from the parish website here.

• In this parish we have two Child Protection Representatives, Mr Bernard Vaughan (Phone 01 4900481) and Mrs Deirdre Kelly (01-4904483).

• It is of utmost importance that anyone who may have suffered abuse or who knows of anyone who may have suffered abuse is aware that they can contact the Child Protection Service of the Archdiocese at 01 8360314. Their website is www.cps.dublindiocese.ie

• Every effort is made to try and ensure that children participating in all aspects of parish life are safe and welcome. I encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the material available to promote best practice in this parish and in our daily lives.

Childrens' Liturgy Group Needs Help

The Childrens' Liturgy Group takes place during the 12.30 mass on Sundays, in school term time. The children (aged 4-8 years) are invited to join the group before the first reading and rejoin
the congregation to say the "Our Father" together. During the group the children are introduced to the teachings of the gospel in a fun and creative way. The group is facilitated by parents in the parish. An area has been reserved in front of St Mary's room (to the far right of the altar) where children return to for the remainder of the mass.

In order to continue with the success of this group we are seeking more volunteers. If you are interested and would like to find out more please leave your name and contact into the sacristy after mass or contact the parish office.
