Church Refurbishment Fund Appeal

Towards the end of this year, St Pius X Church will be 50 years old and we begin our church golden jubilee celebrations. In 1960, the church cost a staggering £633,000 (A four bed roomed house in South Dublin could be bought for £4000 at that time). We are so grateful to the priests and parishioners who gave so much of their time and resources in order to pay off the debt in the years that followed.

Fifty years on, we are now in the middle of a major refurbishment project which is essential from a safety point of view as well as adding to the beauty of the church. Thanks to the Church Refurbishment Fund started by my predecessor and the sale of a parish house, we have managed to collect about three quarters of money required for the project. I would like to thank all those who have and who continue to contribute to the Church refurbishment Fund. I appeal to you to please continue to support the Refurbishment Fund as we will be required to borrow about 250,000 euro to complete the project and the fund will help us to meet the repayments towards the loan. In doing so, we will be honouring those who helped build the church and ensure that St Pius X is in good order for the future. If you are a former parishioner and would like to contribute you will find the contact details on the contact us page.

Temporary Church Closure

In order to facilitate this phase of the Church refurbishment work, it will be necessary to close the church just for next week  during the weekday. There will be no church services during the weekdays only of 1 March to 6 March  in St Pius X. (Sunday masses are not effected) But weekday masses in other churches are 7.30 AM, 9.10 AM and 10 AM in  St Judes, 8 AM in the White Fathers on Cypress Grove Road, and 9.30 AM and 1 PM in Terenure College. In the event of a funeral taking place during the week, St Judes have agreed to facilitate us by allowing us to have the funeral there.  Thank you for your continued patience

Traffic Management at St Pius X

Please note that the one way system of traffic around the church has been suspended during the refurbishment work on the church which will last about five months. The car park at the back of the church is closed to the public during the period of the works. Cars may be parked on the right or left of the church and at the front.

Child Protection Guidelines in St Pius X Parish

There is obviously heightened awareness in the public sphere concerning child protection issues in the Church and in the Archdiocese of Dublin in particular, now that the publication of the interim report of the Commission of Investigation into the Archdiocese of Dublin has been published.

We must first consider those who have been directly affected and assure them of our complete support, if needed and when requested.

It is important to remind you that in this Diocese, guidelines in this area are operated to a high standard. The following guidelines apply

• Safeguarding Children from the National Board for Safeguarding children in the Catholic Church is the most up to date church policy and is available at www.safeguardingchildren.ie

• The state guidelines Children First apply in all our schools and Guidelines in the Diocese are consistent with state policy. www.dohc.ie/publications/pdf/children_first.pdf

• Anyone in this parish working with children -- employees, volunteers and priests are required to participate in Garda Vetting. Details of that process are available at www.dublindiocese.ie

• The Child protection policy that operates in this parish is available from the parish office and can be downloaded from the parish website here.

• In this parish we have two Child Protection Representatives, Mr Bernard Vaughan (Phone 01 4900481) and Mrs Deirdre Kelly (01-4904483).

• It is of utmost importance that anyone who may have suffered abuse or who knows of anyone who may have suffered abuse is aware that they can contact the Child Protection Service of the Archdiocese at 01 8360314. Their website is www.cps.dublindiocese.ie

• Every effort is made to try and ensure that children participating in all aspects of parish life are safe and welcome. I encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the material available to promote best practice in this parish and in our daily lives.

Sign of Peace

Some parishioners have expressed concerns about hand contact during the sign of peace.
The advice from the HSE in relation to preventing  the spread of the H1N1 Virus is that a person who has the flu should not come to mass. Those with flu symptoms are dispensed from their Sunday obligation to attend Mass.

They advise:

a.. Avoiding close contact with people who appear unwell
      and have fever and cough
  b.. Always carrying tissues
c.. Always covering your nose and mouth
with clean tissues, when coughing or sneezing
d.. Always disposing of used tissues into a bin immediately
e.. Washing your hands thoroughly with soap
and water or alcohol based hand cleaners regularly
f.. Cleaning surfaces regularly to get rid of germs

Shaking hands while exchanging the ‘Sign of Peace’ involves a low risk of spreading the virus by hand to hand contact. Of course, members of the congregation who are unwell should in the first instance not be attending Mass/Church. We suggest for the moment that the Sign of Peace may be continued but that on each occasion the priest invites the congregation, if they so wish, to carry out an alternative Sign of Peace without hand contact (such as smile/ nod/ bow), as those with risk factors/ or with individual health conditions may not wish to give/receive the Sign of Peace. The practice of shaking hands on greeting and departure at church gatherings may also need to be curtailed for both clergy and laity.

Love Your Neighbour

These are tough times. In tough times, we need to look out for our neighbours.
Our neighbours may be losing their jobs.
Our neighbours may be losing their houses.
Our neighbours may be elderly.
Our neighbours may be vulnerable.

Our neighbours may need us.

There is an ancient saying,  “Love your neighbour as yourself”.  It means,
we think not only of our own interests, but also the interests of others.
In a number of practical ways, we can love our neighbours,
and rebuild community. Our lives will be richer, and so will theirs.

The website, http://www.loveyourneighbour.ie/ , is dedicated to the recovery of community for the common good--

And who knows, a time may come
when you may need a good neighbour yourself.

"It is no wonder that just the touch of another human being at a dark time
can be enough to save the day.“
Frederick Buechner

Some of the initiatives are the publication of a book on the history of the parish; A Golden Jubilee Mass on the 27 November 2010; the renovation work on the church. It is also hoped to have an exhibition of memorabilia and photographs related to the opening of the church. Childrens' Liturgy Group Needs Help

The Childrens' Liturgy Group takes place during the 12.30 mass on Sundays, in school term time. The children (aged 4-8 years) are invited to join the group before the first reading and rejoin
the congregation to say the "Our Father" together. During the group the children are introduced to the teachings of the gospel in a fun and creative way. The group is facilitated by parents in the parish. An area has been reserved in front of St Mary's room (to the far right of the altar) where children return to for the remainder of the mass.

In order to continue with the success of this group we are seeking more volunteers. If you are interested and would like to find out more please leave your name and contact into the sacristy after mass or contact the parish office.
